To the Trouble Youth

A 4chan anon writes about his life experience in a letter to younger men:

Hi, aging anon here, 39, my prime is coming to its end and it was certainly very troubled, reflecting back at it I can see where it went wrong and I wish to share this new found wisdom with you all.

First and foremost, the education system and your parents were not enough, you are incomplete, unprepared, you have the wrong mindset and you still need to learn.
Use your free time to reconsolidate your base, it means basic things such as concepts and the meaning of words to maths and science, these are actually useful. Don’t be shy to go back all the way to elementary school, you have remnants of it in your memories waiting to be stimulated, it might not even take a week-end to restore most of your many years of scholarity. You really need a good base, to work on your brain’s plasticity, most of you weren’t truly listening in class and forgot about the two third of it. Being able to solve problems involving numbers using your mind alone is an essential skill that differentiates the smarts from the dumbs. The more you know the world, the easier it is to navigate through it.

Consolidate your culture, read, watch and listen to the classics not just for the sake of it, understand why they are recognized as great. Art isn’t just something pretty to look at, it’s a medium. Realize that the great men of History didn’t come from nowhere in the most part, they were sitting on the shoulder of their predecessors who did the same.

Work on your skills, skills make you able, useful and autonomous. Learn how to handle tools, how to cook, gardening, handling a pet, how to play an instrument, athletic and fighting sports, how to play games but not video games, cards and board games, learn another language you deem useful ext..

Fight against bad habits, stop smoking cigarettes, less alcohol, cider over beer, no more than one cup of coffee a day, stop sodas unless it’s occasional, stop adding sugar in your food, limit the processed food, stop being a childish picky-eaters and eat vegetables and organ meat, be less sedentary and move around, watch your hygiene, wear what’s the most fitting while being a bit eccentric but not to the point of being ridiculous, watch out how you spend your money, learn some manners such as never refusing someone’s hospitality, being friendly to strangers ext…. basic social rules. Work on your charisma, on your public image, find the best of yourself and make it your persona, polish it to make it shine but not bland, work on your humour and expressions, make yourself attractive.

And finally, work on your mindset. Recognize the value of things, do not blindly destroy, kill or throw away, you should never seek to destroy value, only to transform it. Willpower is what differentiates the weak from the strong, not physical strength or intelligence even if there is a correlation. It is the power to make the world bend to your desires, your spiritual muscle, your driving force. Having Hope is pointless without it so work on it.

This is what I wish I was made aware back then, the basics of Life.
How is it political? It’s heavily linked to politics, one with the basics of Life will be more aware than your common ideologues currently in power.

I can agree with this a lot. Going back to study topics I enjoy as an adult, such as psychology or history, is very rewarding and different from being forced to do so as a child.
