A bear was sighted stuck atop an electrical pole along Highway 56 in New Mexico on July 20:
The bear was likely startled by something, and climbed the pole the same way it might have climbed a tree in the wild to avoid danger. Unfortunately, it was stuck there. Tranquilizing it would result in the bear falling off, and there were little the authorities could do. People were urged to leave the animal alone so that it could try to get down on its own. Sadly, quite a number of people stopped by to take pictures of the animal, scaring it further.
Eventually it was electrocuted when it attempted to climb down.
Something similar happened back in 2021 in Arizona, but that bear made it down safely.
