Russia VS USA’s Self Sufficiency

A political poster on X, Chebureki man, made an analysis on Russia and why they appeared resilient to the various trade sanctions placed on them during the height of the Russo-Ukraine war around June of 2024:

Russia actually produces stuff people need to exist, like energy, food, materials. The U.S. on the other hand just prints money and sponges up the world’s resources with it, basically for free.

There is also the inconvenient fact that the U.S. is something like $40 trillion in debt, after federal, state and municipal debt is tallied. Just servicing the debt costs three-quarters of a trillion dollars per year.

Russia is probably the only nation in the world that comes close to operating a self-contained economy, as it can satisfy about 90% of its needs domestically.

Americans OTOH would be naked and eating each other in the streets within about two weeks, without imports.

With America’s sticky tariff, nay, economic war with most of the rest of the world, we are fast approaching a point where we are without imports in the country. Would we truly be naked and eating each other as this political pundit predicted a year ago, or would things somehow turn out ok? I suppose we will be able to tell very soon in our country.
