Mouse Turd in Fried Rice – Eaten by the Restaurant Owner Himself

A horrible tale regarding food hygiene came forth from the Sichuan province of China a while back.  A customer visiting a restaurant ordered a simple fried rice dish.  Upon being served with his order, he found what appeared to be a couple pieces of mouse dropping in his food:

The perfectly white grains of rice served as good contrast to the two mysterious black objects.  Upon informing the store owner of this, the owner insisted that it was simply a couple pieces of charred rice from “the grease being too hot”.  The surreal conversation continued with the customer insisting that it’s mouse droppings, after all, since grains of rice does not have patterns on them that make them look compacted.

Before the conversation can go on further, the owner snatched the two pieces of black objects and ate them right in front of the customer.

Regardless of whatever feelings of disgust he had, the customer could only pay for his order and leave.  The owner still insisted that it was a couple grains of blackened rice found in the customer’s order, even when he was interviewed later.

Various people commented on this strange piece of news.  The most important point raised was that even if the wok was too hot when the dish was being cooked, it sure wasn’t possible for only two pieces of rice to be charred black while the rest remained perfectly fine.

A slightly more reassuring point raised among the comments was that mouse dropping aren’t usually that size.  What was found in the fried rice was likely the dropping from some other small animal, perhaps a gecko.

Being a small business owner in China sure is tough.
